All Are Welcome – Co-op Community Events for Everyone

When I’m out and about telling others about our amazing Co-op events, I sometimes encounter people who mistakenly believe that they cannot attend because they are not yet member-owners. Cooperative Principle 7, “Concern for Community” is something we embody each time we host an event. Whether monthly activities such as potlucks, Co-op Connections, and our book club or more infrequent events such as our recent trivia night, we welcome everyone! And if you haven’t yet been to a Co-op event, you have been missing out.

April’s potluck was the place to be! We experienced record attendance along with a plethora of yummy food including a delicious chocolate cake purchased from Milkbox Bakery (an early birthday surprise for me…which I did share J). Second State Brewing continues to support our Co-op by providing the space for this event. Attendees are encouraged to patronize this business partner by purchasing one of their delicious beverages (Co-op member-owners who show their card get a 10% discount on beer draws). Attendees often will share as well as request recipes from one another. If you have a recipe you’ve prepared for a potluck, please send it to us at info@cedarfallsfood.coop. Here is one from the April event courtesy of member-owner Caitlin Argotsinger who is also the owner of Good Food Vibes, one of our new business partners: https://www.goodfoodvibes.com/blog/sweetcorn-cornbread. Please join us for the next potluck on Tuesday, May 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. – same location.

On the fourth Monday of each month, our book club meets to discuss the latest read. On April 23, nine book enthusiasts met at another business partner, Cottonwood Canyon to discuss The Girl with Seven Names by Hyeoneseo Lee. Discussions are always lively, and every month new connections blossom. The next meeting is Tuesday (since Monday is Memorial Day), May 29 at 4:45 p.m. at Overman Park (weather permitting). The group will read and discuss The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis.

Speaking of connections, have you been to Co-op Connections? This smaller gathering is another casual event held at a different local business partner each month. So far, we’ve met at Milkbox Bakery, Cottonwood Canyon, Cup of Joe, Brass Tap, and Urban Pie. I host, but am often joined by a board or committee member or two – we are happy to answer any burning co-op questions you may have. Mainly, this event serves as another great way to meet new people, patronize a business partner, and learn more about getting involved with the Co-op. Join me for the next Co-op Connections on Thursday, May 10 at the Cedar Falls Single Speed anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Don’t forget to check our calendar of events in each edition of the Garlic Press as well as via our Facebook page. I look forward to seeing you soon.
