Member Spotlight: Stephanie Clohesy

Stephanie Clohesy, and her husband, Bill, have lived in Cedar Falls since Bill was hired by UNI in 1987. They moved to the College Hill area, changed homes once, but stayed in the same neighborhood. Stephanie has a strategy consulting business that she runs from an office built onto their home. Bill is an Emeritus Professor in Philosophy.

The Clohesys transplanted here from New York City, so they miss the density and intensity of NYC. But they have found Cedar Falls to be a treasure as a community, full of interesting people that are so dedicated to the community as a whole. Sometimes she thinks about all of the things there are here in the Cedar Valley and wonders who were all the wonderful people that built these things, the parks, museums, and art centers?

Stephanie and Bill are active supporters of many organizations including the Iowa Women’s Foundation, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, UNI, and of course, the Cedar Falls Food Co-op!

They are long-time members of New Pioneer Co-op in Iowa City, When they aren’t going to Iowa City to shop, Stephanie finds great quality food at HyVee College Square, the international food markets, Fareway, Aldi, Hansens Dairy, Steege’s Meat Market, Chocolaterie Stam, and the farmers markets! Stephanie and Bill host a lot of parties and Stephenie does a lot of cooking. They enjoy many cuisines, so she has to be an eclectic shopper!

Stephanie is looking forward to the CFFC opening in Cedar Falls because she likes the idea of locally owned food sourcing, that way the Co-op can control the quality. She likes the idea of researching the best brands for the Co-op to carry and be able to stock products that might not be popular at the bigger stores.

The Co-op will have close partnerships with local farmers and producers. She dreams of things like micro greens being readily available! YUM! She hopes the CFFC will have a deli and some prepared foods like New Pi. She thinks that would be a big advantage for shoppers!

Culinary arts, learning new cuisines, and new ways of doing things are just a few of Stephanie’s interests. She once promised herself that she would study cooking on every continent. Well, travel excluded, some of those classes have come to her! Right here in Cedar Falls she has learned Turkish, Burmese, Indian, and Ethiopian cooking. She studied Mexican in Mexico. She still has a lot to learn, but how fabulous it that?

A love of film, especially documentaries, brings another opportunity for the Clohesys to entertain. They host an annual documentary film series at UNI, and their love of music means, yes, concerts at their house! They especially enjoy classical and jazz, but love almost any style/genre of music.

Polish food (Stephanie’s heritage) is a favorite for major holidays. The couple enjoys great Italian tomato sauce using heirloom tomatoes, garlic, and herbs fresh from the farmers market. They like Greek spinach pie, Indian curry, and Latin American everything!

Stephanie’s favorite season of the year is mid-late summer to early autumn which is the perfect time to enjoy the farmers markets!
