The Teal Pumpkin Project

If you’re excitement for fall and Halloween is dampened by concerns over the amount of processed candy handed out to kids, join in the Teal Pumpkin Project to help provide safe and healthy alternatives on Halloween night.

The Teal Pumpkin Project was started by the Food Allergy Research & Education to raise awareness of food allergies and promote inclusion of all trick-or-treaters during the Halloween season. While the main mission of the project is to make Halloween more inclusive and safer for children with food allergies, taking part can help people be more conscious about what we are handing out to children. To take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project, all you need to do paint a pumpkin teal for your front porch and provide non-food alternatives for trick or treaters. Signs stating that you have non-food alternatives and explaining the Teal Pumpkin Project are available here.

Replacing sugary treats with toys adds a nice variety for kids who already have a pillowcase filled with chocolate. Some good, non-food alternatives are: glow sticks, bracelets, pencils, puzzle books, or just about anything you can find in the toy aisle at the local dollar store. By purchasing party favor grab bags, you can find that swapping toys for candy costs just about the same, and will elicit surprised squeals from trick or treaters.
