Get Moving in May

May is the month where spring seems to finally have a strong grasp on the weather and nature is confident enough to start growing in earnest. May is also National Bike Month, an initiative created by the League of American Cyclists in 1956, to encourage people to get back on their bikes. National Bike Month events happen all across the country, providing educational and recreational opportunities to help people choose bicycling as a hobby and as a mode of transportation. Two events in particular occur simultaneously across the nation; Bike to Work Week, held on May 11-15, and National Bike to Work Day, on May 15.

With the advent of spring and pleasant weather, bicycling provides both a recreational and a pragmatic way to enjoy the outdoors. Bicycling for enjoyment is a great way to get moving. It is easy on the joints and bicycles come in so many styles that finding a comfortable fit isn’t a problem. As a form of transportation, bicycling helps you to avoid traffic and save money on gas and car expenses. Bike commuting can also save the environment by reducing your use of fossil fuels. Cedar Valley Bicycle Collective is an active group in the area that offers education, support, and camaraderie for all levels of bicyclists. You can find out more on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/cedarvalleybicyclecollective, including information about their competition during Bike to Work Week. Cedar Falls also boasts several local bicycle shops that offer repair services and events, as well as merchandise.

Its time to dig the bike out of the garage and get riding! Don’t forget to be safe! Wear a helmet and obey traffic laws as if you were driving a car. Consider purchasing LED lights that increase visibility and also help you to see better after the sun sets.

May is the perfect time to get involved and inspired in celebration of National Bike Month!
